The History of Lindt Stymeist Colorways

The Lindt Stymeist Colorways collection launched in 1986 and is honestly one of my favorites. This fun and unique collection of dinnerware ranged from plates to mugs, to teapots and more. These pieces were created by housewares designer John Stymeist and manufactured in Japan. The Colorways collection was a huge hit and set trends throughout the 80s and 90s. It was discontinued by John in 1996 so that he could focus on new designs. However, it came back for a few additional years afterward due to popular demand, before a final discontinuation.

Two-tone colors were the focus of the Lindt Stymeist Colorways collection. Vibrant mixes of blues, pinks, greens, reds, and yellows made it easy to distinguish from traditional dinnerware. My favorite pieces from the collection have to be the mugs. They’re clearly inspired by the postmodern / Memphis era. I love the “thumb rest” feature.

Now, the fun is in finding the existing Lindt Stymeist Colorways pieces out there! Can you find enough to make your own set? Of course, I couldn’t help to source some of these amazing vintage home decor products for the shop. So, if you aren’t reading this too late, here are a few currently in the Mass Over Matter shop:
